Protesters in New Caledonia put up barricades, blocking the main road that links the capital of Nouméa to the airport. Though the police have dismantled many of these barriers, the road remains closed. French President Emmanuel Macron has called another security meeting to quell the unrest as protests persist on the island.
The pro-independence protests have been raging for over a week, despite the French government’s attempt to suppress them by imposing restrictions on movement, banning TikTok, and mobilizing thousands of police officers and gendarmes on the island. Australia has also offered to send military personnel to the island to support France’s efforts to stifle the protests. So far, six people have died and hundreds more have been injured.
The protests began when President Macron announced constitutional reforms that would give voting rights to white French people living on the island, unfavorably affecting the Indigenous Kanaky residents, who make up 40% of the island’s population. Protesters are demanding that they withdraw the reforms.
New Caledonia, which is known to the Indigenous population as Kanaky, holds importance to French imperial interests because it is rich in nickel and is emerging as a frontline amidst rising tensions with China in the South Pacific.
