鰲頭的村民常把“鰲頭”寫成“牛頭”，一是“鰲”“牛”同音，二是為筆畫簡化方便，三是鰲頭確實與牛有關。鰲頭所在地有鰲山村，村內有小山叫鰲山。傳說以前叫牛頭，因為此地位於花縣、清遠、佛岡交匯處，牛的交易興旺，是著名的牛市。附近多處地名與牛有關：牛山、牛屁股、牛屎、牛屎橋、牛鼻塘等。清朝同治年間，週邊地區相聚在牛頭舉行賽詩會，牛頭得冠軍，取「獨佔鰲頭」之意，更名鰲頭。也有人認為「鰲」指鰲山，「頭」指橋頭，是合成地名。
鰲頭墟。舊時從化的地界只到白兔村，以西之地為清遠。從化最西的墟設在白鶴橋，即人和鰲頭之間的地方，叫白鶴橋墟，逢“三”“八”（即逢每月日期尾數為“三”和“八”的日子）為集市日，「為兩邑之民所奔走焉」（清雍正八年《從化縣志》），是個大墟，清遠、從化的人都來此趁墟。如今鰲頭墟，承傳逢「三」「八」為墟期。

Villagers in Aotou often write "Aotou" as "Niutou". First, "Ao" and "Niu" are homophones, second, it is convenient to simplify the strokes, and third, Aotou is indeed related to cattle. Aoshan Village is where Aotou is located. There is a small mountain called Aoshan in the village. Legend has it that it was called Niutou in the past because this place is located at the intersection of Huaxian, Qingyuan and Fogang, and the cattle trade is prosperous, making it a famous cattle market. Many place names nearby are related to cattle: Niushan, Niubuttocks, Niushi, Niushi Bridge, Niubitang, etc. During the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, the surrounding areas gathered in Niutou to hold a poetry competition. Niutou won the championship and was renamed Aotou, which means "to take the lead". Some people also believe that "Ao" refers to Aoshan and "Tou" refers to Qiaotou, which is a composite place name.
Aotou Market. In the old days, the territory of Conghua only reached Baitu Village, and the land to the west was Qingyuan. The westernmost market in Conghua is located at Baiheqiao, between Renhe and Aotou. It is called Baiheqiao Market. Every "3rd" and "8th" (that is, every day of the month ending with "3" and "8") is a market day, "people from both counties rush to it" (Conghua County Chronicles of the eighth year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty). It is a big market, and people from Qingyuan and Conghua come here to take advantage of the market. Today, Aotou Market continues to hold the market days on "3rd" and "8th".
