The North Carolina House Environment Committee voted in support of a bill that would put the responsibility of cleanup costs for drinking water on PFAS manufacturers. More than 50 drinking water systems in North Carolina are contaminated with PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, according to the Department of Environmental Quality.

The man-made substances don’t break down easily and have been linked to health problems including thyroid issues, developmental problems in children and cancer. New federal drinking water standards would require utilities to filter out the harmful chemicals, incurring a cost that would likely increase water bills. On Tuesday, the North Carolina House Environment Committee voted in support of House Bill 864, state legislation that would require PFAS manufacturers to cover cleanup costs for public water systems.
