How Vikram got into web3 and DAOs
Vikram was still in college as web3 was hitting its stride. He played around with it for years before he decided to explore the idea of e-commerce in the crypto space. They discovered DAOs and all of the ways they can simplify the process for DAO members and solve common problems that DAOs often face.
Common challenges faced by DAOs and how to address them
Most DAOs are focused on survival over growing their community. The essential roles of a DAO are treasury management and community engagement. Focus on these two areas to get your DAO off to the best possible start.
Vikram’s advice for someone starting a DAO
Most DAOs start with just a group of friends. When you really start practicing decentralization, you will feel uncomfortable. We have grown up in centralized communities, so it’s not the way we are used to working. Start with small projects and study the larger DAOs.
Vikram’s favorite DAOs
Vikram spends a lot of time in Nouns. He also really enjoys watching Polygon Village. Another must-see is the work being done with Bitcoin Passport. One interesting trend Vikram is observing is the prevalence of impact DAOs. There are some amazing projects being done in that space.

About Gino and how he got into web3
Gino comes from a human sciences background and has worked in several industries including product design and security. He discovered crypto and he knew he had something to contribute.
Growing pains in the early stages of Decentraland
Engagement is the first hurdle that most DAOs have to overcome. User engagement was one of the most important parts of Decentraland. So it was designed with simplicity and transparency, so users and members could easily figure out what they needed to do.
Advice for people who want to start a DAO
First figure out why you want to do it. Once you have a purpose for your DAO, then try to use an alternative to token voting, because new DAOs have the unique opportunity to experiment with different structures before they grow and become more established. The amount of tokens a member has can be one strategy that informs the weight of the vote, but it shouldn’t be the only strategy.
Gino’s favorite tools for running DAOs
Decentraland uses Snapshot for off-chain voting. He works closely with the Snapshot team, and the team is constantly updating the product to meet the needs of the users.
Other DAOs to check out
MakerDAO and Nouns are Gino’s favorites.

How Deepa got into web3 and DAOs
Deepa got into web3 in May of 2021 when India was hit with the delta virus. A large philanthropic donation through Shiva coin caught her intention, and she started to write on Substack about crypto and philanthropy. She got into DAOs when she saw a Ukraine DAO create an anonymous campaign to help people in Ukraine without getting shut down like many nonprofits in Ukraine.
Common challenges faced by new DAOs
Keeping the community engaged is challenging for new DAOs. Dipa also sees a lot of DAOs struggling to create operating systems to keep the DAO running as it gets off the ground.
Deepa’s favorite tools
Wonderverse is a great task management tool for DAOs. It can be used for big-picture planning or micro-planning. Impact DAO is currently making the transition from Google Drive to Notion for knowledge management.
Deepa’s favorite DAOs
Givecoin is an easy favorite for Deepa. She also loves humanDAO which helps people outsource tasks to people in emerging countries.

How Micah got into web3
He went from buying some Etherium to dedicating his life to web3 in the last few years. He found himself with a lot of extra time on his hands during the pandemic, and he realized that blockchain is one of the most important pieces of technology that he could be working on.
About Micah’s work with Opolis
Micah wanted to contribute at Oplis because of his experience in the employee benefits space. Opolis was the place where he felt he could do his best work on the blockchain. Opolis acts like an employer for people working in the blockchain, paying taxes and running payroll, helping people manage their independent contracting work.
Common growing pains for new DAOs
New DAOs experience massive turnover. That’s not because of you, that’s because people are busy. So it’s important to set really clear goals and break them down and get them onto the calendar.
Common challenges as DAOs start to grow
There are so many open bounties that never get responded to in DAOs. If your DAO is not filling tasks, then you need to start building a development team and set up monthly planning sessions to make sure the tasks are being allocated and the goals are being met.
Favorite tools for DAOs
Sobol is a great tool for mapping out the different roles within a DAO.
Advice for someone who wants to start a DAO
Figure out what you are actually doing. Anything can be done with a DAO. There is a DAO specially made for people named Dave! But remember that you will never decentralize everything.

How Nathan got into web3 and DAOs
Nathan put all of his eggs into the retail basket right before the pandemic, and when he had to close down his business venture, he started getting into crypto and DAOs. The web3 vision captured his imagination and spoke to his values, so he kept going.
Nathan’s current projects
Nathan is working on a new DAO called Celium. He is helping people learn how to navigate the DAO landscape when they are new. They are developing ways to study and improve DAOs, taking a thoughtful and holistic approach.
Common challenges new DAOs face
The most common challenge is getting from an idea to 20-30 people engaged. Nathan also sees DAOs struggle with legal and financial structures or understanding the DAO tooling landscape.
Some of Nathan’s favorite DAO tools
CharmVerse is built with DAOs in mind, and they have duplicated almost all of Notion’s features.
Common growing pains for DAOs
It is rare for DAOs to have a constitution. It is true that a constitution would be a living document, but having that framework is absolutely critical. The rules need to be laid out in order for the DAO to grow and add membership. Decentralized does not mean disorganized.

Ed and Adam from Wonderverse are back for a deeper dive into their web3 origin story. They also talked about their work bringing DAOs into the nonprofit space. They created a software company called Wonderverse that can be an all-in-one tool for running a DAO.
How they got into web3 and DAOS
Adam got into the crypto space, but Ed was able to start his journey through the simple action of hopping into a Discord channel and saying, hey.
Common Growing Pains Experienced by DAOS
It’s important to keep in mind how your DAO will contribute to the space. Having clarity on this one question will help you to make the hard and easy decisions along the journey of growing your DAO. Lots of DAOs struggle with transparency and tracking of tasks that have been completed.
Larger DAOs struggle with tapping into the community outside the DAO itself and getting people involved in the mission.
Number One Advice for Starting a DAO
Similar to starting a company or any other project, it’s really about giving yourself a deadline, setting up a Twitter, and setting up a Discord. Start talking about what you want to do and see if people start to buy in.
Favorite Tools for Running DAOs
Most business SaaS applications are simply trying to replace excel. Guild and Radical are great tools, but sometimes pen and paper are more than enough to get the job done. They have also done some of their own governance on Jump DAO.
DAOs you have to check out today
Gitcoin is probably one of the most vibrant DAO communities you can find. FWB is a great DAO for people who are interested in the arts.

What Spencer is currently working on: DAO House v3
DAO House at its essence is an app. And they are building additional applications on top of the foundational infrastructure to improve the services available at DAO House. There is the potential for new products, businesses, or even applications to operate under DAO House v3.
Common Growing Pains of New DAOs
Permission list environments are difficult to navigate and it can become impossible to get anything done. From an informational and social perspective, too many people on a DAO without specific priorities and jobs can spiral into chaos quickly. Full decentralization is difficult to achieve and may not be totally possible for DAOs just starting out. New DAOs should keep in mind how they will be practicing decentralization in the future, but you don’t have to do that from day one.
Spencer’s Favorite DAO Running Tools
Spencer’s favorite tool would be the one he created, Hats Protocol. His tool supports the delegation of responsibility to DAO members. It supports DAOs in creating roles and assigning them to teams, sub-DAOs, or team leaders.
Spencer’s Favorite DAOs
The WGI DAO is focused on community builders. They are helping DAO-native communities flourish, and they are doing amazing work both within their own DAO and other DAOs. He also uses Smart Invoice which serves as a third-party billing and contract system for web3 clients.

How Aléksa got into web3 and DAOs
Aléksa has a background working in startups and accidentally applied for a role in a DAO. Understanding how DAOs work seemed to come naturally to her, so she dove straight into the web3 world from there.
Aléksa’s company and how it is structured
She is the managing director of a decentralized nonprofit that supports DAOs with governance, frameworks, community, compliance, and more. Her members are either service providers or individual consultants that help other DAOs.
Common growing pains Aléksa sees in DAOs she works with
Understanding what a DAO is and how decentralization works is the most common struggle Aléksa sees. Communities are not used to having the amount of power that they have in DAOs. Aléksa helps DAOs communicate to community members what their role is and what it could evolve into.
The number one piece of advice Aléksa has for new DAOs
Don’t trust one person too much. Do your research and get information from a lot of different sources. Also, find someone to give you a crash course on the basics of DAOs.
Aléksa’s favorite tools for DAOs
Charm First combines Discord and Notion while also creating a feed-like feature that mimics Twitter or internet forums. It is built with a web3 organization in mind.
Aléksa’s favorite DAOs
Aléksa is launching a project to educate female legal professionals in the DAO space. She wants to target underrepresented women in different communities. She also likes Open Currnt, which is a DAO in the making looking to bridge the gap between web2 and web3.

Ben’s background
Ben got into crypto in 2012 after being fascinated with the crypto white paper. Over the last couple of years, he has been able to dive into Ethereum and he believes that crypto really is the future of the internet.
Ben’s current projects
Ben is the founder of Origami, which helps ambitious organizations build DAOs. A lot of current DAOs are simply investment groups and they have limitations. But Ben created a new framework for people who want to build the businesses of tomorrow on the blockchain.
He is also one of the founders of Orange DAO, which is built on representative democracy. It’s a significant success story with over $80 million in assets under it.
Common growing pains for newer DAOs
Most DAOs are getting conflicting advice because attorneys don’t always know how to navigate the space. So a lot of DAOs are frozen in indecision because they don’t want to risk making a legal mistake. This leaves a lot of organizations as a DAO in name only.
Ben has also seen struggles with keeping members engaged. He is building a software program that will include a social platform that will help with member engagement for DAOs.
Ben’s favorite tools for DAOs
Having a spreadsheet with a seasonal budget process has been a game-changer for him. He also likes to use quadratic funding to help plan out how the DAO will grow.

Crypto Bushi’s background and how he got into DAOs:
During the lockdown, Crypto Bushi started trading crypto with encouragement from his friends. He started to do some research and eventually found crypto Twitter. When NFTs started to take off, he decided that would be his next endeavor. Now he makes NFTs and he is active in the web3 space.
Avoiding early growing pains of DAOs:
You need a strong team for any web3 project. Everything should be made to the highest level of quality possible. Everyone should be excited and empowered to work within their specific zone of genius. Problems are inevitable, so the excitement needs to be there for when those challenges arise.
Crypto Bushi’s favorite tools:
A relationship with a great developer is the most valuable thing that you could possibly have to build a successful DAO. There are too many tools out there, and advice from an expert developer can help you pick the best ones.
Favorite DAOs to check out:
Bankless is one of the top ones as well as DAO Punks. He also recommends Cult DAO, because the fundamental governance structure has been solid since the launch date. There are also a lot of problems that people can learn from. Also, check out Social DAO, and Boys Club for any women listening.
Top advice for people starting DAOs today:
You can’t expect people to work for free. Even if you think you are working towards a good cause, you are going to have to start compensating if you want the best people on your team.

Defi’s background and how he got into web3 and DAOs
He bought his first NFT after getting rugged, and he started to get the hang of the web3 rules through the mentors he connected with on Twitter. He joined a DAO that did things really well and by the book, which set him up with everything he needed to be successful moving forward in the space.
Defi’s current projects
Defi is creating a collective of consultants that pay their membership in equity, so they can build their wealth while also helping to further the goals of the DAO.
Common growing pains and how to address them
Defi knows what it’s like to build something from scratch. He also understands that structure is not the opposite of decentralization. He often sees DAOs pull away from the structure that the DAO needs in order to survive. The DAOs are an opportunity to differentiate between power and influence. Everyone in a DAO is a leader, but that doesn’t mean that there shouldn’t be rules that are collectively followed.
Everything that happens in a traditional company has to also happen in DAOs, it just won’t come in a hierarchical model as it does in traditional companies.
Advice Defi has for people who are starting a DAO
Be very intentional about who the starting team is. If you are starting a DAO on your own, then it’s not a DAO, because it is inherently centralized. So the start team is critical to getting it off the ground. And once you have that team, get used to disagreements. Healthy conflict can bring the best results to the project, so getting comfortable with being criticized and challenged is so important to building a successful DAO.
Favorite tools for running a DAO
Defi currently uses Notion.io and Discord to run his DAO.
