Jughead's Basement is hosted by Screeching Weasel, Mopes, and Even In Blackouts' co-founder John Jughead Pierson. The podcast has three subcategories: Dissections of punk records. Long-form interviews of punk & alternative musicians, comedians, and underground performers. Plus, lastly, an old fashion radio adventure that tells the twisted tale of two men attached to one body roaming an unknown mansion meeting and interviewing different guests every episode.

Episode 26 - David Lyons - Lo Fi Interviews
In this second episode I talk to David Lyons. David is an LA Location Manager. He spends his day finding and managing locations for television and Feature Films. David has been at this job for 15 years and has worked with directors such as Wim Wenders, Noah Baumbach, Sean Penn, Terrence Malick, David Lynch, Mike Nichols, Oliver Stone and JJ Abrahms, to name a few. He also produced pilots for Fox and Adult Swim. David, may be known to many of you as the character Koko in one of the internet video pioneering serial comedy Yacht Rock.

I met David when he sang a Weasel song with me at a show hosted by Jonah Ray, in Chicago. I liked him immediately and presented him with a rare gift. It was an empty bottle of Weaselbrau, a brewed beer consisting of only one case of beer Screeching Weasel made in, oh shit, maybe like 1989. This gift blew his mind, and so he invited me to stay anytime with him in LA. And so he made these LA interviews possible.

David also has a podcast called "Beyond Yacht Rock", where he and other creators talk about Yacht Rock while defining new, made up genres such as "Disco Dips" where your favorite rock artists attempt to cash in by doing a disco song, or " Africa-dabra", a genre that showcases artists that get inspired by the plights of poor natives after viewing them from the back seat of an air conditioned Range Rover. It's on Starburns Audio, or iTunes, or wherever people listen to that kind of thing now.

All things involving authentic yacht rock can be found at www.yachtrock.com

Episode 23 - Sludgeworth’s Losers Of The Year
This episode finally sees the light of day! I have been working on it for two years. I had dropped it at one point because we could not get the full band involved. But after an email thread with all the participating members it was decided to forge ahead. Sludgeworth was one my favorite bands to watch on stage during the early days of our Chicago scene (1989 - 92). So I am proud to release into the world this long awaited episode, 1995 Lookout Records compilation release of Losers of the Year including interviews with band members:

Dan (Vapid) Schafer (vocals)
Adam White (guitar)
Mike (Strat) Hootenstart (bass)
Brian (Vermin) McQuaid (drums)

Episode 22 - Grim Deeds & John Jughead - Dueling Interviews
For Episode 22 We will be introducing a sub format for some episodes from The Basement. To help fill the long periods of time between full band episodes we will now engage in a second endeavor called Jughead’s Basement Presents: Dueling Interviews. In these episodes the interviewer and interviewee will become one, and within a previously dictated amount of time these two will pose questions for each other to answer, hopefully resulting in a somewhat meaningful conversation. Each episode will contain two randomizing elements to lead the questioning in different directions. And each interviewer/interviewee will have two minutes at the end to some up. This podcast will NOT be highly edited, and will be more of a spontaneous exploration of art and music.

Episode 20 - The Apers' Self Titled Debut
This is the beginning of the podcasts venturing to honor the few European bands that took me in when I wandered the world, searching for myself and trying to complete my first novel, Weasels In A Box.

The Apers, from Rotterdam, opened up their lives to me and let me stay with them and play a few shows with their band, around the time of the release of this very record.

This podcast is co-hosted by
Ramona Confidential founder: Sara Ramone

Interviews on this podcast include all four band members from the Self Titled Record:
Kevin Aper - Bass & Vocals
Ivo Backbreaker - Drums
Jerry Hormone - Guitars
Marien Nicotine - Guitars and Backing Vocals

Episode 18 - The Promise Ring’s Nothing Feels Good

Episode 18

The Promise Ring’s Nothing Feels Good

Released October 14 1997

I came to the Promise Ring late in their career, but their 2nd full length record, Nothing Feels Good, quickly became one of my most played records. I believe this to be one of the most solid records from beginning to end in all of the post punk genres of which I am familiar.

This podcast features individual interviews with all of the band members appearing on Nothing Feels Good, Singer/Songwriter Davey von Bholen, Second Guitarist Jason Gnewikow, Drummer Dan Didier, and Bassist Scott Beschta. This episode also includes an interview with Gub Scott Conway of Gauge, Screeching Weasel, and Even In Blackouts. Plus two written audio pieces by Promise Ring fans Rust Belt Jessie and Joe Jacob.

There is much hard work put into these podcasts to attempt to make them as thorough as possible. If you are enjoying the products of this hard work on a consistent basis please share with others or donate some cash to the cause.

Episode 17: Episode 17 - Bhopal Stiffs: Songs from the Catalog of a Classic Chicago Punk Band

Bhopal Stiffs strikes close to my heart. They were the first band Screeching Weasel played with in Chicago, outside of our suburban homes. We played at a 21 and over club that was called Batteries Not Included. There was barely an audience there to see either bands but when Bhopal Stiffs got on stage their energy, music and commitment blew me away. They are first on my top two punk shows that I have ever seen.

Interviews with band members:

Larry Damore

Steve Saylors

Vince Marine

David Schleitwiler

Assistant Editing by: Jason Brow

CORRECTIONS:
1. Jim Ellison from Material Issue passed away in 1996.
2. In the podcast I play an Effigies song when referring to Iain Burgess. I played Body Bag, but Iain didn't engineer and produce till later records: Fly On The Wire and Ink.
3. The Christian Televangelist is Robert Tilton.

Episode 16 - The Vindictives' Hypno-Punko™

The Vindictives’ 1999 release of HYPNO PUNKO™

With interviews of each band member represented on the record:

Joey Vindictive, Johnny Personality, Billy Blastoff, Jenny Gee, and Angel Ledezma.

An eccentric punk rock concept record in the midst of most pop punk bands pushing for a piece of the mainstream? Well… sorta the history. Listen and explore the depth of this very personal record conceived by the band’s frontman Joey Vindictive.

Episode 15: Episode 15 - Big Black's From Bulldozer To Atomizer

Big Black’s aggressive and abrasive music was characterized by distinctively clanky guitars and the use of a drum machine (who they lovingly called Roland) elements which pre-cursored industrial rock. The band acknowledged no taboos and Albini’s lyrics openly dealt with loaded topics including murder, rape, child sexual abuse, and racism. They also held staunch principles, shunning the mainstream music industry and insisting on complete control over all aspects of their career. This podcast attempts to tell a portion of the history of the band from the perspective of their ep Bulldozer through their first full length record Atomizer. (Marking a transition from a project purely conceived by Steve Albini into a cohesive band with the added influences from collaborators Santiago Durango and Dave Riley.) This episode is co-hosted by Russ Forster and includes interviews with band members Santiago Durango, Steve Albini, and Jeff Pezzati, including extra interview material with friend and fellow songwriter/musician Camilo Gonzalez. Lastly an audio piece written by journalist/novelist/radio personality Jim DeRogatis. Russ Forster is a perennial dabbler in the underground and eccentric. Past exercises in cognitive dissonance include Underdog Records, 8-Track Mind magazine, documentaries So Wrong They're Right and Tributary, and various and sundry bands and acts like his current extreme-solo project Rakehell. The original intention of Jughead's Basement was not to conduct interviews of band members, but only to spotlight some of my favorite writers writing about some of my favorite records. But that quickly veered towards having a few interviews since I enjoy having conversations about music and creativity. I now like the balance of both interviews and writers. I had scheduled Tom Wait's Rain Dogs before seeking interviews became a facet. Instead I gathered together the best of my favorite writers, and they shared their stories and thoughts on one of the best singer/songwriters of the last few decades: Tom Waits. I did try to get an interview with him, but with no success. Really it was a pipe dream, a quixotic challenge I gave myself. I do plan on continuing my effort to get an interview with him, which I would instantly sprinkle on top of this podcast. But until then this single podcast represents the purity of my original idea.

The Cast

Jesse Michaels: was the lead singer and songwriter for Operation Ivy. His other bands have included Common Rider and Classics Of Love. He is now working on a novel to be released sometime this year.

Tim Stafford: is a Chicago writer, performer, husband, and Father. He can be seen regularly with the Chicago based The Encyclopedia Show.

Larry Livermore: is the founder of Lookout Records. He has also written for Maximum Rock N Roll. He is also working on a book. And has a website with much writing: www.larrylivermore.com

Joe Jacob: is a professional motion graphics animator living in Chicago. He also engages in various forms of writing, the results of which tend to toil in obscurity and fuel his narcissistic martyr complex.

Bradley Adita: is a punk house survivor, juggler of miscellania, publisher of A Day In The Air zine, and "Head Butthead" at Pop Punk Dot Com.

Matt Ellin: is the youngest writer we have had on this podcast, 13 Years Old! He discovered punk rock and its various offshoots a few years ago through exposure to The Ramones and The Sex Pistols, and it’s changed his life for better or worse. He immediately took to singing (And more recently playing bass) in bands. He listened to punk rock religiously and studied its stories. As a musician, He has no desire to be generic and he wants to do things in punk that haven’t been done. As a writer, he likes to bring new ideas and philosophies into the scene.

Connor Kalista: was born and raised in Texas. After he finished school there and abroad, he lived in Chicago, where he worked in museums and made lots of theater. Mostly with the Neo-Futurists but also with Theater Oobleck, Plasticene and Schadenfreude. He now lives in Brooklyn where he works as a film and video editor and most recently completed work on Without Shepherds, a documentary about Pakistan that will premiere at the 2013 Slamdance Film Festival. He is currently at work on a documentary about Somali pirates. He still makes theater and in 2011, he co-created and performed with the New York Neo Futurists in the Drama Desk nominated production, The Complete and Condensed Stage Directions on Eugene O’Neill, Volume One: Early Plays/Lost Plays. He still goes to lots of live shows and wishes he had more time to draw.

Sonja Amazonka: Sonja always felt that there was something inherently wrong with the world, and was happy to discover likeminded people in the Belgrade punk scene when she was a teenager. Punk rock inspired her to try and understand society and the way in which people make it up in their heads, thus she became a social anthropologist. Sometimes, when she’s not too busy writing academic papers, she writes short fiction. She is certain that her voice sounds more nasal when she’s speaking English.
