October 5th Street (formerly known as Cinco de Outubro Street, Portuguese: Rua de Cinco de Outubro) is located in the western part of the Macau Peninsula, spanning St. Anthony Parish, the Main Basilica District and Feng Shun Parish. It is one of the famous streets in Macau. The northern end is connected to the junction of Shalitou Seaside Street, Yuzhi Lane, Basutar Ancient Street and Congqing North Street. Along the way, it is connected to Shalanzi Street, Caodui Street and Kanggong Temple Square, Xinma Road, Baiyantang Heng Street, etc. The street, connected to October 5th Lane in the south, is about 625 meters long and 8 meters wide. The street name commemorates the revolution of the First Portuguese Republic that overthrew the Kingdom of Portugal on 5 October 1910 (see below), while the old name was derived from the dismantled Sigua Pier. In the 1940s, there were four traditional Cantonese-style tea houses in Macau (Yuan Lai, De Lai, Liu Guo and Guan Nan, all of which have closed or transformed), two of which were located on this street.
This place was originally a recessed seaside shoal in Beiwan. From Congqing North Street in Congqingfang to Baiyantangkou, the total length was only about 500 meters at that time. Since there is a Si𠵼 Pier near Salan Tsai, the street is named "Si𠵼 Street" (Portuguese: Rua Nova de El-Rei). In the middle of the street, there is Si𠵼 Market, Desheng Press and Kang Zhenjun Temple. (commonly known as "Kanggong Temple"). During the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, after the Qingpingzhi Street and Baiyantang areas were filled in, the street was extended to the middle section of Huochuantou Street. In the 1900s, it was already a very prosperous street in Macau. On October 5, 1910, a revolutionary uprising broke out in Portugal, overthrowing the monarchy and establishing a republic. Later, in order to commemorate this event, the Macao-Portuguese government selected a prosperous street in Macao to be named. Therefore, Si 𠵼 Street was selected and renamed October 5th Street. To this day, October 5th is designated as a public holiday in Macau every year [Note 5]. The term "Chu" was coined by the Macao and Portuguese authorities to cater to the Chinese habit of naming the first day of the month with the word "Chu". It does not refer to the "Fifth Day" on the lunar calendar.
The former site of Guannan Tea House has been demolished
In the 1910s, there were two traditional Cantonese-style teahouses in the early Republic of China built here between Muqiao Street and Baiyantang - Dexin Teahouse (later changed hands and expanded to Liuguo in the 1940s) and Jinlong Teahouse (later changed hands to Guannan Tea House). )
