潭江發源於廣東省陽江市牛圍嶺，流經恩平、開平、台山、新會，最後在會城注入大廣海灣經濟區銀洲湖出崖門入海，被稱為新會的母親河。河流長248公里，集水面積達5068平方公里。潭江的恩平段又稱為錦江河。其中，銀洲湖水面壯闊，是八百年前宋元海戰的所在地。由於長年的泥沙沖積和圍墾造地，銀洲湖兩岸的廣闊區域在數百年間已演變為陸地，其實際水域已比數百年前大幅縮小。
潭江上游開平段設有孔雀湖國家濕地公園，潭江下游新會段設有牛勒水廠，抽取處理潭江江水，為新會區提供自來水。潭江是江門市(恩平、開平及新會)的主要排水通道，工業、農業和生活污水都排進潭江；加上潭江本身徑流不大，自淨能力較弱；以及潭江下游容易受鹹潮上溯影響水質，所以牛勒水廠從2006年停止日常供水，僅作緊急之用。牛勒水廠停用後，新會主城區主要依賴江門水廠調撥經處理的西江水。 2016年古兜山東方紅水庫供水工程陸續完成，開始為新會主城區提供自來水。

Tanjiang Peninsula Hotel is located on the banks of the Tanjiang River in Kaiping City, a famous hometown of Jiangmen Wuyi Overseas Chinese in China. It is the first five-star hotel in western Guangdong Province. It is also the first county-level five-star hotel in China.
The Tanjiang River originates from Niuweiling in Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province, flows through Enping, Kaiping, Taishan, Xinhui, and finally flows into Yinzhou Lake in the Daguan Bay Economic Zone in Huicheng, and flows out of Yamen into the sea. It is known as the mother river of Xinhui. The river is 248 kilometers long and has a catchment area of 5,068 square kilometers. The Enping section of the Tanjiang River is also known as the Jinjiang River. Among them, the surface of Yinzhou Lake is magnificent, and it was the site of the naval battle between the Song and Yuan Dynasties 800 years ago. Due to long-term siltation and reclamation, the vast area on both sides of Yinzhou Lake has evolved into land over hundreds of years, and its actual water area has been greatly reduced compared with hundreds of years ago.
The Peacock Lake National Wetland Park is located in the Kaiping section of the upper reaches of the Tanjiang River, and the Niule Water Plant is located in the Xinhui section of the lower reaches of the Tanjiang River, which extracts and treats the water of the Tanjiang River to provide tap water for Xinhui District. Tanjiang River is the main drainage channel of Jiangmen City (Enping, Kaiping and Xinhui), and industrial, agricultural and domestic sewage are all discharged into Tanjiang River. In addition, the runoff of Tanjiang River itself is not large, and its self-purification ability is weak. In addition, the water quality of the lower reaches of Tanjiang River is easily affected by the upstream salt tide. Therefore, Niule Water Plant stopped daily water supply in 2006 and is only used for emergency purposes. After the Niule Water Plant was shut down, the main urban area of Xinhui mainly relied on the treated water of Xijiang River allocated by Jiangmen Water Plant. In 2016, the water supply project of Dongfanghong Reservoir in Gudou Mountain was completed one after another, and began to provide tap water for the main urban area of Xinhui.
