South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo at the site of a deadly factory fire that killed at least 16 people.
The fire broke out around 10.30am local time, at a facility of lithium battery manufacturer Aricell in Hwaseong, a major industrial cluster about 90 minutes from the capital Seoul.
Officials say the blaze began after a series of battery cells exploded inside a warehouse that had some 35,000 units. What triggered the explosion remains unclear. The blaze was very intense, making it tough for rescuers to identify the dead.
Search was on for five missing people who were inside the factory when it caught fire. Battery materials are very inflammable, making it tough for those trapped in the factory to respond on escape. The factory was established in 2020. Aricell makes lithium primary batteries for sensors and radio communication devices. It has about 50 employees.
The interior minister who made a detailed inspection of the factory and interacted with rescue and police officials pledged full support to the victims
The blast was so strong that it threw pieces of batteries around the factory premises
He called on local authorities to take steps to prevent any hazardous chemicals from contaminating the surroundings
